Scholarships and bursaries for post-secondary education and labour education
In the labour movement, we recognize the vital importance of education to a healthy
and prosperous workforce. However, we also know that post-secondary education is out of reach for many middle-class families due to increased tuition costs, the growing privatization of post-secondary
schools, and the fact that wages have not grown to meet the rising cost of tuition.
To help with the high cost of education, our unions, locals, and affiliated organizations
provide a wide range of scholarships for students connected to SGEU. In this directory, you will find post-secondary awards, scholarships, and bursaries valued at over $60,000. Union activists who want to pursue labour studies opportunities have access to funding valued over $20,000.
Applications are now closed. Only successful recipients will be notified. Applications will reopen in 2025.
SGEU Awards for Full-time Studies
SGEU offers the following three bursaries for SGEU members and/or their dependants.
Sharon Hurd Bursary
2024 recipient: John Honored
The Provincial Education and Publicity Committee is pleased to name one of our full-time bursaries in honour of Sharon Hurd. As SGEU Education Officer from 1987 to 2002, Sharon Hurd developed the union's first comprehensive steward education program—the Leadership Development program. This bursary is available to an SGEU member or their dependant who is enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies.

SGEU Financial Need Bursary
2024 recipients: Allie MacDonald, Kayla McKenzie
SGEU is offering two bursaries for SGEU members and dependants who are enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies. At least one will be awarded to a self-identified applicant from the SGEU equity-seeking groups. If no applicants from these groups apply or qualify, the bursary will be awarded to one of the other applicants.

SGEU Awards for Part-time Studies

The union is offering two bursaries for SGEU members and their dependants who are enrolled in part-time studies. At least one will be awarded to a self-identified applicant from the SGEU equity-seeking groups. If not applicants from these gropus apply or qualify, the bursary will be awarded to one of the other applicants. This bursary covers fall, winter or spring sessions.

Community Services Sector Scholarships

2022 Anne Burkholder Memorial Scholarship recipient: Ginelle C. Peterson
Community Services Sector awards the Lynda Bliss Memorial Scholarship and the Anne Burkholder Memorial Scholarship annually. These scholarships are open to all members of the SGEU Community Services Sector in good standing, their spouses or dependants.
Note: The Community Services Sector may consider applications from other sectors should there be no qualifying candidate from the Community Services Sector.

Crown Sector Scholarships
The Crown Sector awards four Susan Jeannotte Memorial Bursaries and one Christine Day Memorial Scholarship each year. These bursaries and scholarship are open to all SGEU Crown Sector members, spouses and dependants. To find out if you are in the Crown Sector, please look at your union membership card: the four-digit Sector # must start with the number 2.
Susan Jeannotte Memorial Bursaries
2022 recipients: Emily Herzberger and Tahir Zaman
Two $2,000 bursaries for full-time, and two $1,000 bursaries for part-time studies, are available to members in good standing who have held memberships in the union for at least one year and are enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution, community college, or other post-secondary institution; the Labour College of Canada; and other recognized institutions or courses considered appropriate by the committee.

Christine Day Memorial Scholarship
2022 recipient: Seth Lendrum
One $2,000 scholarship for full-time students is available to members in good standing who have held memberships in the union for at least one year and are enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution, community college, or other post-secondary institution; the Labour College of Canada; and other recognized institutions or courses considered appropriate by the committee.

Education Sector Financial Awards
The Education Sector supports three bursaries in memorial of three of our former members. The Education Sector also offers two scholarships for members and three scholarships for members' dependants.
These bursaries, financial awards and scholarships are open to SGEU Education Sector members in good standing or a member's dependant that is accepted in any post-secondary program at any approved public institution in Saskatchewan for programs starting between July 1 and June 30.
Anand Vaid Memorial Bursary
2022 recipient: Madigan MacKay
Anand, like most who get involved with the union, began as a steward in the 90s at the Wascana Campus in Regina. He listened to his fellow co-workers and their plights and wanted to do more to assist them to understand and learn more about their rights and their collective agreement. Anand branched out to serve on several committees to assist others and also gain a better understanding of how best to represent his co-workers.

Tracey Kurtenbach Memorial Bursary
2022 recipient: Junea Wilderman
Tracey started her work as a steward for the members of the Professional Services bargaining unit and then as the local campus chairperson. She went on to become the bargaining committee chairperson and steered the membership through many significant changes and events.

Shawna North Memorial Bursary
2022 recipient: Alexis Gerski
Shawna was a very vocal and active member at the Moose Jaw Campus of Saskatchewan Polytechnic. She started as a steward at the then-named SIAST Palliser Campus. She worked hard to support the local members and went on to become campus chair in 2009.

Health Sector Scholarships
Health Sector Bursaries

The Health Sector is awarding four $500 busraries. These bursaries are open to all Health Sector members in good standing, their spouses and/or dependants. The applicant must be registered in either full-time or part-time studies at a recognized post-seconary institution. All applicants must apply in good faith as to the completion of their studies.

This $250 scholarship is open to students who are graduating from grade 12 during the current school year from a school outside the City of Melfort and whose parent/guardian is a member in good standing of SGEU Local 3354-1.

The Health Sector Local 3354-3 awards up to two $250 scholarships annually. The scholarships are open to all Local 3354-3 members in good standing, their spouses and dependent(s). The applicant must be registered in either full-time or part-time studies at a recognized post-secondary institution. All applicants must apply in good faith as to the completion of their studies.

Each year, NUPGE offers seven scholarships that reflect its pursuit of equal opportunity for all workers.
