Regina, SK—Following mediation, the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees’ Union (SGEU) Public Service/Government Employment (PS/GE) Negotiating Committee has reached a tentative agreement with the Government of Saskatchewan.

Details of the agreement were brought to PS/GE’s bargaining council on May 9 and 10, and the council voted to present the agreement to the membership for ratification.

Negotiating committee chair Lori Bossaer said she supports the council’s decision to bring it before the membership.

“This agreement is the product of months of hard work at the bargaining table,” Bossaer said. “Our goal was to negotiate a contract that provides wage increases and improved working conditions that address recruitment and retention for our members, who provide important programs and services across the province. It’s now up to the membership to make an informed decision.”

The union is planning virtual information sessions with members to provide additional information and answer questions.

PS/GE is SGEU’s largest bargaining unit, representing over 11,000 members who work in government ministries and agencies across the province. Among them are firefighters, correctional officers and youth facility workers, income assistance workers, child protection workers, conservation officers and equipment operators to name a few.

The current collective bargaining agreement between both parties expired on September 30, 2022. The two sides have been in negotiations since January 2023; SGEU served notice of impasse in February 2024 after minimal movement from the employer at the bargaining table. In March 2024, a government-appointed mediator began to work on bringing the two parties closer together.

The bargaining unit is currently coordinating ratification votes, and members can expect more information in the coming weeks.

“I want to thank our negotiating committee and bargaining council for their tireless efforts to reach this settlement,” Bossaer said. “I also want to extend my appreciation to PS/GE members for their support and solidarity throughout the process.”
