SGEU promotes workplace stability as health care amalgamation gets underway

The legislation to amalgamate the province’s 12 health regions into one Provincial Health Authority has been introduced.
The Provincial Health Authority Act, tabled March 28, 2017 in the Legislature, does not address the issue of whether workers’ union representation will be affected by the amalgamation.
SGEU has raised concerns with government about the impact of the restructuring on health providers, who are already struggling to provide quality health services given limited resources and too few staff.
Patients, residents and families receive the best care possible when frontline health care workers can be assured of a stable work environment and sufficient resources. SGEU has joined other unions in calling for a Bargaining Council structure for health providers that would help maintain stability in labour relations.
The government expects the new legislation to come into effect in the fall of 2017, but the restructuring, including the re-design and amalgamation of various health services, will be phased in over time.
SGEU will continue to work with other unions to promote options that will ensure stability in health care workplaces.
Health restructuring could affect SGEU members in the Kelsey Trail, Mamawetan Churchill River, and Keewatin Yatthé Health Regions, the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, and eHealth Saskatchewan.
