Meet the women’s committee!
The SGEU Women’s Committee brings awareness to issues affecting women members, encourages women to participate in union activities, and works with other women’s organizations to advocate for women in the labour movement and beyond!
Why did you decide to get involved in the women’s committee?
Our province needs to address women’s issues, such as period poverty, interpersonal violence, access to reproductive services and pay equity legislation. As part of this standing committee, I want to help create change and bring awareness to members.
Tanya Turner, Chair
Education Sector
Because I am passionate about empowering and supporting women in my community, especially those who have faced adversity. I would like to work with the committee to provide opportunities for women with low English proficiency and those who have experienced trauma.

As a DV survivor, I am passionate about supporting women, fostering empowerment and advocating for a world where everyone feels heard, safe and supported. I am determined to contribute to positive change in the lives of others who have experienced domestic violence.

We need to help each other. We need to break the glass ceiling for women in leadership. We need more allies and support for all women’s issues, such as childcare. We need to be brave and stand up for women’s rights. These are just a few of the reasons I’m involved in the SGEU Women’s Committee.
Muna De Ciman
Public Service Sector
I believe that it is important to address issues involving women like violence against women. It is also very important to address period poverty so all women can have access to the products they need. I am interested in the Women’s Committee to help bring awareness to all.
Shawna Doucette

I was first interested in representing the Health Sector on the SGEU Women’s Committee so I could learn more about the issues affecting women in our workforce. I am always learning and want to help encourage equality, safety and respect for all.
