Message from President Tracey Sauer
Dear members,
Saturday, April 29, marked the end of our 2023 annual Convention.
Convention is SGEU’s supreme decision-making body. Each year, members elect delegates to represent the membership by discussing changes to our union’s constitution and policies, reviewing important resolutions, and electing SGEU’s leaders.
This year, over 200 delegates attended our convention in Saskatoon, and I was so heartened to see the passionate debate and discussion that took place on the convention floor. Thank you for speaking up, asking questions, voicing your concerns and ensuring that our union is moving forward.
In honour of SGEU’s 110th anniversary, the theme of this year’s convention was “A Bold Past and Bright Future.” After seeing the passion, excitement and curiosity of our members at Convention, it isn’t hard to be optimistic about the future of our union. I am especially encouraged by the first-time delegates and first-time speakers who participated this year—your involvement is so important, and I am proud of you for stepping up.
I want to thank the Convention Procedures Committee—Carol Yuzik, Steve Lavallee and Sherry Magera—as well as staff and members for their hard work in making this event a success. Coordinating events like this is no small task, and I applaud each and every person who had a hand in making it happen.
Convention consists of delegates debating constitution and policy changes over the span of three days—but the decisions made on convention floor shape the union for all 20,000+ members, every day. We recently sent an email to all SGEU members that contains the highlights of our recent convention, and I encourage each of you to read through it, to ask questions, and to get involved.
If you would like more information, don’t hesitate to reach out to your sector Vice-President.
I hope to see you at next year’s convention in Regina.
In solidarity,
Tracey Sauer (she/her)
SGEU President
