SGEU Bursary & Scholarship Application Form

Information about SGEU awards for full-time and part-time studies

Eligibility

To be eligible for an SGEU bursary or scholarship, you must:

  • Fill out the application below. A copy of your submission will be emailed to you.
  • Upload your essay in a Word or PDF document.
  • Be registered as a student in a publicly-funded educational institution.
  • Be a member in good standing of SGEU who has held membership for at least a year, OR
  • Be the spouse of a member in good standing of SGEU who has held membership for at least a year, OR
  • Be the dependant of a current, retired or deceased member of SGEU who held membership for at least one year AND you must meet the following three requirements:
    • Be a family member by blood, marriage, adoption, common-law relationship, or equivalent circumstance
    • Be supported financially by the SGEU member or their surviving spouse or estate (receive room, board and other significant living expenses as opposed to occassional gifts of cash)
    • Live in Canada with the SGEU member, or their surviving spouse, or guardian as determined by their estate, unless living elsewhere in order to attend an educational institution.

Essay information

When applying for best essay and also for financial need, you will need to include an essay with each application. The essay topics must be different for each application.

Note: If you choose to submit you application for best essay, please note SGEU reserves the right to use all or any part of your essay in other SGEU materials.

Essay topics

  • How can SGEU promote inclusion, accessibility, diversity and equity within our membership to strengthen solidarity and ensure all workers feel represented and empowered?
  • Explain the benefits and challenges of using social media to enhance SGEU Union engagement, participation, and communication.
  • Explore the unique challenges and opportunities that SGEU faces in attracting youth. Propose methods, other than using social media, for fostering a sense of solidarity and advocacy among younger generations in today's evolving labour landscape.
  • What are some key benefits that workers have gained through the labour movement and how did unions contribute to improving workers rights, job security and workplace conditions?

Essay instructions

  • Is approximately 500-750 words long
  • Is typed and double-spaced
  • Includes a bibliography listing at least two resources
  • Does not include your name or signature on any page
