Established in 1994, Indigenous Veterans Day is an opportunity to honour and learn about the Métis, First Nations and Inuit people who served in the Canadian military. It is also a moment to acknowledge the injustices they faced during and after their military service.
Indigenous peoples have fought for Canada for years, dating all the way back to the War of 1812. Though exact numbers are not known, over 4,000 Indigenous people served in World War One, and over 3,000 Indigenous people served in World War Two.
Last year, the Indigenous Committee hosted a screening of “Forgotten Warriors,” directed by Indigenous filmmaker Loretta Todd. This 1997 documentary is about the thousands of Indigenous Canadians who enlisted and fought in World War II, despite being denied the rights provided to their fellow soldiers.
The film is available to watch for free through the National Film Board of Canada: https://www.nfb.ca/film/forgotten_warriors/
