Indigenous people have long passed on knowledge from generation to generation through oral traditions, including storytelling. Storytelling is a traditional method used to teach cultural beliefs, values, customs, rituals, history, practices, relationships and ways of life. It is a foundation for holistic learning, relationship building and experiential learning. Traditionally, it is during the winter months that Indigenous storytelling occurs.
Since 2004, the Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal Peoples Inc. and the people of Saskatchewan recognize and celebrate Indigenous Storytelling Month. This annual event has given the chance to build bridges between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Through the month of February, storytelling events are held by libraries and community organizations throughout Saskatchewan to showcase the lives, histories, practices and cultures of Indigenous people and performers.
